Sunflower

My mom has lived in the same cute little house for about 15 years now.  Out her back door there is a cute little patio.  She was trying to decide what to do with it and when she started digging she discovered a beautiful stone walkway underneath the dirt.  After finding that, all of her landscaping was sculpted around that stone pathway.  It was there the whole time.

Hidden Pathway

Throughout my house are little vision post-its, as opposed to vision boards.  They have things on them like ‘Get Paid to Travel, Successful Writer with books on the New York Times best seller list, International Teacher, Policy Reformer.’  You know, everyday dreaming. Personal goals.

I saw Carol Agana posting pictures with the nursing students in Ghana.  I was so jealous.  Why in the world didn’t they have that program while I was in school?  Then I thought, wait a minute, wonder if I could head up a program to take nursing students to Thailand.  Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Hidden pathway.  It was there the whole time.

I love learning about other cultures and ways of thinking.  One of the things that fascinates me is food.  It’s difficult to eat poorly in Thailand, even though it is a 3rd world country.  American food doesn’t even compare.  Especially when you look at hospital food.  I don’t understand how our hospitals can continue to serve such unhealthy food when the majority of our hospitalizations are due to lifestyle choices and food choices.

Our world has become more globally interconnected with the internet.  It only makes sense that the more we learn about other practices that work in other places, the better systems we will be able to develop here at home.  I’m only in the beginning stages of discovering if this can go in the direction I want it to.  But I hope it will be a bridge to help more health care professionals here in the states realize the possibilities of better health care, and of food as preventive medicine.

Taking nursing students to study in other countries is a great way to broaden our education, open up our profession to other ways of doing things.  Possibilities.  I remember reading that the United States rated 30th among developed nations in health care.  That’s terrible.  We obviously have a lot to learn.

So often the things we are hoping to achieve are possible, many times the answers are right under the surface and we don’t see them right away.  I can’t tell you how many times that has been the case for me.  Hidden pathways.  Answers to the big stuff, right in front of us .
